Georgia State Patrol in Villa Rica is reminding area residents to plan their travels carefully, keeping safety as the number one priority as they prepare for the holiday travel weekend. The 78-hour holiday period begins tonight at 6:00. Traffic crashes during the 2008 holiday period claimed the lives of 22 people statewide. 1,860 traffic crashes were reported and 910 people were injured. Traffic estimates for this year suggest similar numbers. |

This Independence Day weekend, runners from all over Georgia will line up from Lenox Square to kick off the 40th annual Peachtree Road Race. Carrollton resident and basketball coach Larry Turner says he has run the race almost every year for the past three decades. The race will take place Saturday morning. It is the largest road race in the world. |

The University of West Georgia has named Skip Fite to replace former coach Doc Fowlkes, who resigned in May following 19 seasons as head coach. Fite was announced last Friday following 25 seasons as head coach at Augusta State University. The Wolves coach is already on the job. |

Despite the holiday ahead, gas prices are expected to lower this week in West Georgia. Triple-A Auto Club South Public Relations Director Gregg Laskoski says the national average price of gas has fallen by five cents a gallon over the past week. Road construction projects throughout the state are expected to be put on hold through the holiday travel time. The halt begins Thursday, June 2nd, at noon. Road work will resume Monday morning, July 6th, at 5:00. |
